The history of the house

A guest in a house with 280 years of history

Our house looks back on almost three centuries of history. The Alte Hafnerei ("old potter's house") was built as early as 1742 – as the workshop and home of a family of potters who practised their craft here for generations, making stoves, jugs and earthenware. Among its residents was the Schladming master potter Johann Paul Aschauer, who also served as the town's mayor from 1858 to 1861. His wife, Anna Maria Aschauer, is still associated today with a precious gold bonnet (Goldhaube), now on display in the Schladming City Museum. For generations the house has been cared for and preserved by our family. Today we run it in the fifth generation and open it as a holiday apartment for guests from all over the world – so that this special place lives on.

  1. 1742 – The Alte Hafnerei is built as a workshop and home.
  2. 18th/19th c. – Several generations of the potter's family live and work here.
  3. 1858–1861 – Master potter Johann Paul Aschauer is mayor of Schladming; his wife's Goldhaube survives to this day.
  4. Today – Lovingly preserved as a holiday apartment in the fifth generation.
